The use of alum is widespread, but also is part of a controversy over its safety. Patients with Alzheimer’s disease have elevated concentrations of aluminum in their brains, and some studies have shown an increased risk for those who drink from aluminum cans or regularly use aluminum-based cosmetics, such as alum aftershaves. Other studies have shown that there is no relationship between the use of aluminum products and the development of Alzheimer’s.
